The split between football and rugby came from Oxford University, who couldn’t agree whether they preferred to play by foot or by hand. Rugby, or ’rugger’ was formed, as the Oxford Rugby school preferred to play by hand, leaving football, or ‘soccer’ (using the ‘rugger’ rule but applied to the ‘soc’ in football ‘society’) to make its own way.
