Half-time came about because each team used to play by different rules, so the first half was played by the rules of one team, and the second half by the other! Prior to this, games were notoriously difficult to referee, as some teams thought it perfectly appropriate to pick up the ball and run headlong into the gall. Half-time eventually gave games balance, order and the all-important pep talk from the team manager.
