‘The Sims’ is inspired heavily by Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, which dictates the specific needs that must be fulfilled to result in contentment. The simulations in the series, just like human beings, require their basic needs to be satisfied first - food, warmth, rest, water - and only once those have been provided do they move on to other needs, such as the desire to be loved and achieving one's full potential through self-actualization.
