Though most often remembered for her work in nursing, Florence Nightingale served also as a mathematician, inventing a graph called the coxcomb and providing statistics to save lives. She thought the coxcomb, a variation of the piece chart, should “affect thro’ the Eyes what we fail to convey to the public through their word-proof ears.”
